Gardening Knowledge 101: Coleus

Gardening Knowledge 101: #Coleus aka Solenostemon scutellarioides (now Plectranthus sigh). I get asked this question a lot… What is that red plant? Or what is that (points to Fishnet stockings cultivar). It’s a Coleus. They are our workhorses. These annuals can take full sun but do like some shade too. And moisture! Their flowers are insigificant and can be pruned back. They are easy to propagate from cuttings and can grow in water until the roots start showing. Prune off the top growth to make them bushier. Oddly enough most people also think they are a perennial. Nope, Zone 10-11! You can take them indoors in the winter, but aphids and other pests love them.
